Flowering - Starch, Temperature and Potassium NitrateI ran across some interesting flowering information that is definitely worth reporting. All of this work has been done on mangos (why?), but it should also have strong effects with other plants. Potassium NitrateSome research has concluded that 4% (40,000 PPM) foliar applications of potassium nitrate to mango plants 3 times at 14 day intervals had strong effects to promote flowering. [http://www.actahort.org/books/175/175_40.htm ] StarchAnother paper [http://www.actahort.org/books/509/509_62.htm] would indicate that the mango would need to accumulate enough starch before the use of nitrate and that the way the nitrate works is that is causes accumulation of starch - when the accumulation of starch hits a certain level then flowering occurs. TemperatureA third study [http://www.actahort.org/books/275/275_14.htm] concluded that starch will accumulate when the temperature is lowered.
