This is the most economical form of Gibberellic Acid. It is soluble in 70%
common rubbing alcohol. Gibberellic acid is an important plant hormone that can improve
seed germination and
plant growth and size. Our
users have reported significant improvements in their production of
tomatoes,
peppers and
squash among others.
All product descriptions should not be interpreted as a claim. It is only a summary of information commonly found on the internet including laboratory research. Products are not available in Canada.
The 90% gibberellic acid powder must first be dissolved before
it is diluted and used. From our own test we have found
three ways to dissolve it; with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), ammonia or alcohol. When using either alcohol
or ammonia use only enough to dissolve the powder. Basically, you don't really need much more
than enough to get it wet. For example, one scoop of powder will easily dissolve in 1/2 teaspoon
of alcohol.
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
We must start by advising you that currently there is a strong hypothesis that sodium bicarbonate might make
the gibberellic acid inactive (not work). We mixed 1 scoop of GA3 90% and
2 scoops of sodium bicarbonate. We then added one teaspoon of water
(I used a white plastic cafeteria teaspoon.) and it dissolved within
a few minutes (we had to shake it a few times, but that's like mixing sugar and coffee. If
you don't stir the coffee, the sugar stays at the bottom). The dissolved liquid was then poured
into 0.4 liters (2 cups) of water to make a 180 PPM solution. The solution had a PH of 8.4 so we
added ten scoops of vinegar and brought it down below to 7.6.
Alcohol
Alcohol is most commonly used to dissolve gibberellic acid so this may be the best
way to do this if you are trying to get the same results as other users and researchers.
Gibberellic Acid can dissolve in alcohol that is at least 70% pure. I have
dissolved GA3 in 70% Isopropyl alcohol, which is also known as rubbing alcohol;
it can take several hours (see example below) but it works, and the time it takes is
not a problem. I also use 99% methanol (also called methyl alcohol). One of our users reports
using 91% Rubbing Alcohol bought at Walgreens for $1.49.
Case Study With 70% Isopropyl Alcohol
As a general rule the more alcohol you use and the more pure it is the faster and
easier the GA3 powder will dissolve. On the other hand you also want to use as little
alcohol a possible since you will use the final solution (after dissolving it then
dilute it with water) on the plant.
As an experiment I tried one scoop of powder with 4 scoops of 70% isopropyl alcohol.
The next morning, after about 12 hours the powder was partially but not
completely dissolved and I added 2 more scoops of alcohol. Over the next
few hours I shook the container a few times and within about 4 hours the powder
was dissolved.
Ammonia
GA3 dissolves faster in clear ammonia. I'm not sure about this approach, since I don't know if
the ammonia damages the GA3. On the other hand, ammonia evaporates very easily and ammonia is
also a fertilizer. Just make sure that the ammonia does not contain other stuff.
I dissolved GA3 in a solution of 1 part water and 1 part ammonia.
Then I tried 2 part water 1 part ammonia; that worked but more slowly.
Then I tried 3 part water and 1 part ammonia; while it seemed to mostly dissolve
it did not appear to be complete.
Conclusion
Ammonia is pretty effective; to dissolve one scoop of GA3 (1/32 teaspoon) I used 1/8 teaspoon of
ammonia with 1/4 teaspoon of water. When that dissolved I added more scoops (3 or 4), one at a
time and each one dissolved.
With 70% Isopropyl alcohol I successfully dissolved 1 scoop of GA3 in 1/2 teaspoon of the
alcohol. But after dissolving 1 scoop I added a second scoop and that didn't seem to dissolve
as well as the first one. In this case adding more alcohol would be needed.
Applying
Gibberellic Acid is generally used as a foliar spray.
Gibberellic Acid Concentration
You need to use different amounts of Gibberellic Acid depending on what you are doing.
One way to figure it out is by looking at the Gibberellic Acid FAQ to figure out what
parts-per-million (PPM) to use. Don't worry if you don't understand how to
calculate
the PPM; just use the tables at the bottom of the page. You can also do an internet search with your favorite
search engine (Yahoo, Google, ...).
Please read the FAQ and select the PPM that seems the best for you type of plant and the type of results you
want. It may be smart to start at an even lower PPM and over time, depending on results, you can raise or lower
the PPM.
